San Loco founder Darrell Nelson started life as a corn-fed Nebraska farm boy whose mom took full advantage of an extensive family garden and cooked everything from scratch. His dad was a rancher and farmer who drove trucks during the winter when it was too cold to do anything else. Darrell often went along for the ride and was exposed to every hole in the wall burrito joint from Texas to Canada. By the age of twelve, he was hooked on the genre of food. Starting at fourteen, Darrell washed dishes in a Mexican restaurant, where he also learned to cook the favorite foods of his childhood. Darrell fused Mexican together with his far north-of-the-border family home cooking creating the taste that is in San Loco restaurants today.
The first San Loco was born in 1986 and opened in early 1987 on the corner of 2nd Ave. and St. Mark's Place. In 1989, along came Kimo Hing - a Mohawk-sporting punk rocker who started out as a cashier and line cook, and is now a partner in the business. Kimo also married Darrell's sister Jill, and along the way she too has become a San Loco partner.
The hallmarks of that original location still hold true today - good food that goes down easy and won't set you back much at all. 1 2 3 >
